tl;dr how is the market for data scientists and what experience would I need for an English-speaking company?
As the title says, thinking of my long-term future in Japan after being here for a while and I have two potential options.
- Find a place at a grad school. This is my ideal route, and while my field (plant genetics) isn't lucrative, it's feasible I'd be able to work as a Bioinformatician if academia doesn't work out.
- Find work as a Data Scientist/Statistician. I worked as one prior to moving to Japan, but I suspect I wouldn't qualify for mid-level positions (which seems to be the only ones listed). If so I may have to leave Japan for a while to gain experience in a role back home.
Is this assumption correct about finding data science positions, or is it plausible to start at a lower level?
P.s. While I'd love to just go for academia, I'd be almost 30 by the time a scholarship started. I know in theory I'd have a comfy salary afterwards (if I chose industry > academia) and have money saved up already, but it's another caveat for me to consider.
