Question ablut barbers

I've been travelling in Osaka and wanted to get a beard shave wth a razor. Walked in to 4 different barbershops in Shinsekai area and all of them said that they don't shave foreigners only Japanese. Anyone got an idea about this?

  1. I go to a place in Whity Umeda and get a shave all the time. Haircut, shave, beard trim, nose wax, and shampoo. 4000 yen. Look up Shimizu Barber Whity Umeda Osaka. It’s not fancy, and you’ll need a little Japanese – but I really am happy with their service. You even get a shoulder massage after.

  2. Lol what? Are you going to an actual licensed barber or one of those cheap station places? I’ve never been denied a shave.

  3. It sounds like there’s some language issue here, could you tell us exactly what they said?

  4. This is a sub for residents of Osaka.

As you say, you are a Traveller.
Hence the hostile responses you can see.

Now, apart from avoiding rule breaking, I will give you some advice.

As a Traveller, you probably have communication issues.
Now, this, combined with the fact that your are walking around in what many consider the arsehole of Japan (don’t get me wrong, I love it lol), means you are probably getting a GOOD deal by being refused.

Imagine being a Black man walking into a very white Anglo suburb of Doncaster and asking the local barber for a flat top and fade… in French.

Like others have suggested, I also recommend going to a more salubrious area of town, i.e. North, and trying again.
I doubt you will have too many issues around Umeda.

  5. I imagine they actually said/meant ‘they only speak Japanese’ not only serve Japanese.
Many places if not all will happily serve you, just speak slowly and clearly if you can’t speak much Japanese or use the translate function on your phone to avoid miscommunication.
Plenty of places offer what you ask and many barber type places around namba/shinsaibashi have exactly what you need for 4-5000 yen
