Best overnight road trip from Tokyo to see the snow

I want to take a short trip from Tokyo just to see the beauty of the snow. My vehicle is 4WD and equipped with studless tires and I have a lot of experience driving in snow.

I think somewhere in Nagano prefecture might be the best bet. I won’t be skiing and I don’t want to stay in a ski resort, and I would like to keep the lodging cost to a minimum (less than ¥10,000 ) so expensive onsen resorts are out.

How about others like Tochigi?

  1. Take a drive to lake nojiri. Visit the hotspring called tengu no Yu, in iizuna. Bask in the glory of a snowcapped Mt. Iizuna from the hotspring.

  2. You could try the Venus Line, which is a very beautiful scenic road along the top of mountains in Nagano. It starts in Chino, south of Lake Suwa, and goes up to the east of Matsumoto. The whole area is beautiful. I can’t guarantee snow. I think it sometimes gets closed due to snow though. Anyway, Lake Suwa is nice, Matsumoto has a castle and other nice places to visit. You can see Mt. Fuji in the distance from some spots.

  3. Guesthouse Raicho in Norikura. Private outdoor onsen, snow shoeing hike to a frozen waterfall, and on your way there or back you can stop by Matsumoto to see castle. Highly recommend Storyhouse Cafe too in Matsumoto. We did this trip in the summer but even if you’re not skiing I think you’d enjoy a weekend/overnight in Norikura.

  4. It’s a bit early for snow, but the closest to Tokyo is probably the valleys around Chichibu.
