Company asking for GPA

There is a company asking for my GPA for a mid to senior level position. Is this common practice in Japan?

I've never heard of a company asking a mid to senior level candidate for their GPA for this level. I can't understand how it can be so relevant either. I can't go back to my country, nor can I contact my university due to circumstances outside of my control (The university I graduated from no longer exists physically temporarily).

I can get any reference check directly from companies HR I worked for or even with former colleagues, but not my GPA.
