Advice for a 14 Day (ish) Itinerary for 1st Time to Japan

Hi 🙂

My fiance and I have been wanting to go to Japan for awhile, and decided that we would like to go in March 2023 for our honeymoon. We are planning to visit for about 2 weeks, and would leave around the 20th.

This itinerary is taken from a website (traveljapan). If you have any suggestions of must-see things or ideas of activities that we could do to flesh out the days that would be awesome. We are going to do a customised itinerary also, so we are open to adding/removing/changing things around.

We are interested in educational tours/learning more about the histories/culture as well as visiting musuems, shrines, temples, gardens etc. We would also love to visit the new Ghibli Park as it should be open by the time we go. We would also love to see a sumo match if it is possible.

Day 1-2: Tokyo

Things I would like to do:

Studio Ghibli Musuem (not in the itinerary, Samurai Museum, see the rainbow bridge, (is it worth getting a ticket for Skytree?)

Day 3: Nikko World Heritage 1 Day Tour. Visitng Lake Chuzen and Kegon Falls

Day 4: Travel to Mt Fuji, ride on Mt. Komagatake Ropeway to the peak. Travel to Hakone for dinner and hot springs for the evening, staying overnight at a ryokan

Day 5: Bullet train to Takayama.

Day 6: Tour Gokayama Ainokura and Shirakawa-go. Travel to Kanazawa

Day 7: Visit former samurai residence at Nagamachi Samurai District and Kenroku-en Garden

Day 8: Morning cycling tour through Kyoto, going through the backstreets. The tour visits Geisha Quarters Miyagawa-cho, Ishibei Koji Alley, the Gion district, Yasaka-jingu Shrine, Shirakawa River and Heian-jingu Shrine. Then visit Arashiyama Sagano Bamboo Grove

Day 9: Travel to Nara, visit Todai-ji Temple, Nara Park, Kasuga-taisha Shrine

Day 10: Travel to Hiroshima and visit Miyajima Island, Itsukushima Shrine, the Peace Memorial Park and Museum and the legendary Atomic Bomb Dome. Travel back to Kyoto

Day 11: Kyoto, Arashiyama Monkey Park

Day 12: Travel to Osaka. Osaka Castle Garden, Dotonbori

Day 13: Universal Studios

Day 14: Go home

Thank you for your help and advice. 🙂

  1. If you’re looking to see cherry blossoms, make sure you’re flexible on the itinerary right up until you leave, as they can change fairly drastically from year to year.

Also, I went to kanazawa this last cherry blossom season, and kenrokuen is beautiful, but there are bees everywhere. If you aren’t okay with them constantly flying overhead, I’d recommend ritsurin in takamatsu on shikoku later in your trip, as it is also very beautiful.
