Started new job, need to see doctor before health insurance card comes

Hey everyone. So I started working a new job this past week. I think I need to see the hospital urgently, but I won’t get my new company health insurance card until I finish some paperwork with the company. I talked to my boss about it, and it sounds like the card might not get here for a week or two, as they still have to finalize some paperwork.

Though I don’t have the card, might I still be covered since I’ve started working?

  1. As far as I know, you will have to pay in full but can go back to the doctor once you receive your card, and will get refunded.

    At least that’s how it worked for my daughter.

  2. As long as it’s a procedure covered by insurance, most of the time they’ll let you bring in the card after the fact. I wouldn’t worry about

  3. Ask your HR. My partner had the same situation and they gave him a letter with the info the doctor needed.

  4. Depending on the type of place that you’re getting treated at, you’ll either: pay 100% and get reimbursed when you can show them the card or
    * pay 100% and get reimbursed by the city hall/ward office after showing them your new insurance card (might need your banking info for this).

    Outside possibility, they let it float and only ask for the 30% if you think you could show them the info by end of month. But I’ve only had that happen with Drs we have a longstanding relationship. If you’re brand new to them, expect to pay in full at first.

    A phone call ahead of time explaining your situation and asking for an approximate cost & whether they take cash only, might also be good.

  5. My best advice is to ask the clinic/hospital directly.
    It really depends on the place but for me, I went to 2 different clinics right after starting working and before receiving my insurance card. One made me pay in full but told me I can get reimbursed if I can show them the card later (which I did) while my usual dental place knows my face well enough and just asked me to pay 30%.
