Why do salary men never tell you what they actually do?

Is this just me?

Whenever I meet someone with a normal job. They will often say 'I work for a big company' or 'I'm in sales'. But like, what?

Is this a cultural thing? I understand not necessarily having much to say or wanting to talk about work. But I feel like 'I'm a mechanical engineer' etc isn't too personal!

Edit: wow I got my first reddit award. I would like to thank all the people working at nonspecific japanese companies around the world.
