Dec 28-Jan 4 trip :(

This is the only time we can go due to the kids’ schedules not matching up.

I know its a terrible time due to holiday closures. We are considering Hakone, Tokyo (akihabara), and Awaji Island (kids like anime).

I am trying to figure out which city will still have things to do from Jan 1 onwards. Any ideas? Doesn’t have to be the above 3. I think Awaji Island amusement park may be closed Jan 1-3?

  1. I’ve been in Tokyo over the new year. You won’t really notice it. Plenty is open and there’s still tons of stuff to do.

Sensoji will be extra, extra busy.

  2. I feel Awaji is really out of the way for presumably a first trip and just 8 days? It’s very rural and you’d most likely would need a car (I just came back from a trto Tokushima and Awaji). If the kids like anime I’d recommend to go to the Fuji Q amusement park instead, it has a part on NGE and can be reached by bus from Tokyo and overall is a pretty cool park. Mt Fuji area in general is beautiful and close to Hakone. There is plenty open in Tokyo Jan 1 as every store sells their lucky new year bags (fukubukuro), it’s actually pretty busy on that day.

  3. Still lots to do with the exception of 1 January being pretty quiet but it can be nice to see the cities that way too. Great winter illuminations everywhere!

Awaji is too far. If you want the ocean, look into the Izu Peninsula.

  4. I’m guessing you are talking about Nijigen no mori in Awazi? If so they are open all year round.
