Is it OK to mention my Japanese boyfriend on my Working Holiday Visa Application?

I am currently putting together my application for my Working Holiday Visa to Japan. However, on the outline of intended activities I want to mention that I will be spending December/January in my SO's hometown: Niigata. Unfortunately, its not a very well-known city so, I feel like it will raise some eyebrows if I don't mention my boyfriend. I also want to list him as my guarantor and as an address for me in Japan.

In the past when I've flown into Niigata's airport, customs officers asked me a lot of questions (in Japanese) why I could speak a little Japanese, why am I in Niigata etc. They searched my bag and seemed generally suspicious why I was there. As soon as I remembered the word for "boyfriend" and told them they closed up my suitcase and sent me on my way with no problem. That's why I am more willing to mention him in the visa application.

Has anyone any views on this? I know for entering the US and UK it's a strict rule to not mention your SO as immigration want to know you will leave. I could say I'm visiting "friends" or just brush over it altogether if people think that's best, but I am a bit reluctant to just completely lie, especially as I want to use his address.
