Hi, I'm moving to Japan in October and my university has recommended this:
If you plan to commute to university by bicycle, please check the traffic rules and manners in Japan in advance, register your bicycle for crime prevention when purchasing it, and be sure to take out bicycle insurance. Japan is a relatively safe country, however, bicycle thefts and accidents involving bicycles are not uncommon.
Does any one have recommended stores or tips regarding insurance/registration? I will be living in Kyoto. Thanks!

I set up a paypay account after getting here and ended up just using them. ¥370 a month and can just apply through the app. Quick and painless.
