  1. How were the kids in the swimming pool without adult supervision? Is this common in Japan?

  2. That’s so sad & can happen sooo quickly… having a lot of kids in a pool at once is honestly so dangerous. This year my kids’ district switched from using the elementary school pools to using a local sports facility’s indoor pool with actual swim instructors on hand, and I was quite relieved, to be honest.

  3. Title is somewhat misleading, people are going to get the wrong impression if they don’t read the article. The school wasn’t able to use their own pool and instead chose to use the DEEPER Junior High School pool. The result is this tragic accident.

It’s an irregularity in itself. They should never have had elementary school kids who aren’t confident in water in a pool deeper than themselves.

My kids are always well supervised in their pool lessons in Japan, as I’m sure most others are.

This is a sad, tragic learning experience and I really feel for the parents. The school district should be entirely liable and held accountable for this.

  4. Absolutely tragic sequence of events. I feel so bad for the parents of that poor child.. and for the child, as well. How terrifying.

  5. I saved a 5 year old girl that had drowned within mere minutes. Gave her cpr and rescue breaths. We did everything perfectly and she fully recovered. This was 5 years ago at a hotel pool. We had 6 kids and four adults, with two other adults out of the pool.

It was the worst and best day of my life. When she started breathing on her own and came back, it was euphoric. I can’t explain how happy I was. I had major anxiety around bodies of water for years afterwards.

  6. Just terrible. I don’t know how I’d ever recover from this if I was the parents.

  7. Not to excuse the school or take anything away from this awful tragedy but this is an extremely rare occurrence – in this case, under extenuating circumstances. To add some context, ALL school children learn to swim in Japan. Most schools, even in crowded Tokyo, have a swimming pool or access to one. This is to be commended. When my family moved to the UK, I was completely shocked by how few swimming facilities exist here. Most schools have no pool. In my part of London, there is currently only one public swimming pool for the entire borough. Fortunately, my son learned to swim before we moved so he’s a strong swimmer and works part-time as a lifeguard. I really hope this new Labour government raises the priority of swimming tuition in this country.
