Western room to hybrid tatami room?

Hi, I'm going to move to a new apartment soon and am considering introducing a hybrid tatami room. The apartment is a one-room layout with a kitchen area in the same space where I will sleep.

In the past few months, I've used a low table with a floor chair as my workspace and really enjoyed working at a lower height. I also don't mind sleep on harder surfaces. Now that I'm moving, I think a futon and a low dining table would be a great addition. Since it's a one-room apartment, rolling up the futon when I have guests would also create more space.

I'm planning a 3 x 3 meter tatami area with a square tile in the middle.

What do you guys think? Considering the kitchen will be in the same space, do you think there's a risk of mold developing quickly? Any insight would be welcome!

I try to add a picture of the room in the comments

  1. Do you mean ユニット畳? Most of those are probably treated to prevent mold and mildew, but if you are worried about it, you can put a [mold-proof sheet](https://item.rakuten.co.jp/kouhin/boutyuu6jyou/) or similar underneath. Also, regularly drying them in the sun is also effective.

I have used [tatami-bed](https://www.nitori-net.jp/ec/cat/Bed/BedframePipeTatamiTatami/1/) (畳ベッド) before and it was also useful since it had big storage under the surface (tho it’s not low height).

  2. Just curious if you live in Japan, or are you sourcing tatami in some western country (and if so, where are you sourcing them from?).
