Seems like it's almost impossible to get market rate. I'm a bit pedantic, but the processes is difficult and not in our favor?!
With Fidelity, I can buy as much JPY at market rate as I'd want. But there's no way to use it unless I have a JPY bank account.
Wise lets me use up to 100 dollars a month and then they charge 2% fee. Even with this, I'm not confident I can use a virtual card at the ATMs in Narita. (It's a bit too late for me to get a physical card)
Remitly, I can only send money to a friend. I can't send money to myself and pick up cash at Kyodai Remittance.
Credit cards are the best where the ones I'm considering have nearly market rate with like no fees. But I have to make purchases and can't withdraw cash. I think I need cash in order to pay for Suica. Â A credit card cannot be used to top up a Welcome Suica Card…. in 2024..? why?!?!?!?
Credit card cash advance is crazy, so they give great rates, but when you want cash, it's a 5% fee. Why are they so against cash even if I'm getting it from them? (rhetorical question – it's probably how much your analytical data is worth)
Suica doesn't support android and I don't have an Iphone.
I hear that the Schwab debit card is great. I can't really tell how great it is, and it's also too late for me to obtain.
I don't think I can get actual ATM live fees/conversion rates. I'd like to know exactly what the rate is at say 7/11/ Narita airport/ post office.
Getting JPY from my credit union I get 148 jpy when market is 160.
People have pointed out that Narita exchange rate is not bad.. but what percent fee charge is not bad? less than 2 percent off market?
Do you actually need any cash while in Japan? Can you go from Tokyo to Hiroshima and back on just credit cards?
edit: thanks for the down votes btw!
