What Kindle features do you use?

I've just started trying to read books on a Kindle, and am really liking the experience. I have a few dictionaries installed but I'm wondering if I can get any more out of it – I see "word wise" in the options, is that worth it? Do you use anything other than the basic hold for a word definition/hold-and-drag to translate longer pieces of text?

  1. I recently got a simple stories Japanese book on my kindle. I’ve been loving it so far but i’m really pissed at the note taking feature. I’m having a hard time selecting the specific characters that i want to attach a note to. Kindle keeps selecting a random number of characters. Very annoying

  2. I mostly just use the J to J dictionary to be honest. I find trying to do much else on kindle is a pain, with how difficult it can be to accurately highlight sections you want to highlight, etc. access to the Japanese kindle store is also a dream, especially if you’re linking it to a credit card in the US so you can pay USD for JPY prices.

  3. I only use kindle to read manga and kindle Unlimited novels. I always convert kindle books that I bought to epub and read them in iBooks so I can use the far superior ios dictionaries. Kindle dictionary only shows you one entry even if there are multiple matching hiragana words. Also, the text layout shift from time to time like this paragraph used to start on line 2 of page x but after changing my iPad’s orientation and reverting back to the same orientation, the paragraph now starts on line 10 on page y. The X-ray feature is pretty nifty when I read novels with lots of places and/or characters though.

  4. The vocab builder on the Kindle is pretty basic, but it’s something.  If you want to make better cards, though, you can pull the cards out and put them in Anki with something like this:
