Seem to be a lot of wild boars around my area. How likely am I to be attacked hiking?

I’ve seen two and they’re both quite skittish, both seemed to be mothers with piglets (not the same, saw them on different mountains.) My questions are whether they ever attack unprovoked. I’m sure they’re quite shy animals but I thought it’s best to research, and from my understanding it’s only when they come into contact with farmers defending their crops that they get aggressive.

I live in Kyushu, so bears shouldn’t be a problem (in theory.)

  1. No idea bout Japanese types but when I encountered them in another country I was advised to be very cautious if the mom has little ones in tow.

  2. Probably not – I’ve seen multiple boars in Chichibu – if you don’t sneak up on them or approach them you should be fine. Most animals can smell you miles away so just be sure to make noise on the trail whether you bring a bell, talk to a friend, sing a song , or smack your hiking pole off everything like I do!

  3. If you hear Louis Armstrong’s “Wonderful World” start playing, all I can say is “Run!”
