Buying the cheapest kei car I could find ended up not being the wisest choice. It already broke twice (alternator & other part needed replacement) and is about to break soon again. So I’m looking to buy a new (used) one for around 40万円 this time and sell/turn in the one I own in the process.
So my question is how would the actual purchase work when It comes to insurance for instance? If I drive over to the shop and purchase the new car – I won’t have insurance for it when I drive back home right? And do shops usually trade in your old car when you buy a new one?
Sorry if it’s a stupid question, first time car-owner here. 🙂 Appreciate any help!

You’ll pay everything mandatory with purchasing the car. If it has a plate and shaken, it’s insured. That takes paperwork, so you probably won’t take it home the day you have a look at it.
The additional insurance you’ll have to deal with yourself, usually talk to
your current insurance dealer to adjust from your old to your new car.
They may take your old car, but probably for very little at all
I bough a brand new hybrid recently, I went to many shops and I bought Honda. The good was that they have a plan like raku/Tanoshi Kurama. I pay monthly all included (on my part is only gasoline and parking) all insurance , shaken , maintenance etc is one package.
So I pay around:
31.000 monthly (new car+ all papers and etc for 5 years)
15.000 Parking
Gasoline (the car do 31km/l so is not much)
After 5 years I can keep the car (pay what’s left in more years) , they buy the car back or change to new one .
Mazda, Toyota and Subaru didn’t had that plan (insurance I had to pay by myself but they recommend some, for me is “raku” just pay all in one quote to Honda)
When you sign the contract, usually they ask few days to get the car ready for you. At that time, you can ask for a copy of shaken. With the copy, contact your insurance company, tell them about the day you are planning to change the car and show the shaken. They will be able to make a new insurance that will start at the day you will get the car.
Yes, you can give your old car away, but depending on the condition of the car, they will give very little for it
