How to immigrate to Japan without losing US citizenship with my potential spouse?

This requires some context. My boyfriend is Korean born, half Japanese, with a father who is a Japanese national living in Japan. He lived in Japan for 3 years during COVID then moved to Canada where he lives and works now. He wants to renounce his Canadian citizenship to become a Japanese national. I am American born with no intentions of renouncing my citizenship because getting it back if I return to the states would be almost impossible even though I was born here.

What I want to know is if it would be easier for him to become a citizen then for me to marry him and move in, or if we should get married before he gets citizenship and then for us both to move in together. I don’t know if being a married couple entering the country would have any benefits or different visas or if I would still get the spousal visa.
