  1. >The company rejected Wood’s request for parental leave. His son was born prematurely and he rushed to see him though the company told him to just keep working, according to the lawsuit.
    >
    >In a 21-page ruling, the Tokyo High Court rejected the harassment claims. It defended the company’s acts as “inevitable.”

    >The Tokyo District Court ruled against Wood in 2020, saying it did not find “reasonable grounds” for believing there was harassment. **It also criticized Wood for taking his case public instead of quietly resolving the dispute with the company**, which has made some changes to its parental leave policies since Wood’s dismissal.

    >Yoshitatsu Imaizumi, one of Wood’s lawyers, said the case still could be contested on various grounds including Woods’ dismissal for having complained about harassment. That would potentially violate the right of workers to bring up harassment, he said.

  2. This case is quite complicated. He didn’t (couldn’t?) give the company any authentic proof that his son had been born at that time. Idk who to blame.

  3. In Japan, you have extremely generous paternity-leave rights. Provided, of course, that you’re not dumb enough to use them.

  4. Putting aside whatever virtue or moral justification there is in the case he brings (ok, I understand some may not want to put it aside, meaning I’ve already lost you), is an expat or naturalised citizen the right person to wage this campaign in Japan? Because he makes it very clear that he is on a campaign/crusade and is not just about his own individual case. Witness :

    > “Standing up for parental rights is actually a gift that I’ve been given. And I’m happy to do that, not only for Japan but for the world,” he said.

  5. Japan: birth rate is low, we need more babies!

Also Japan: fuck you for being a parent, work yourself to death and give your life to the company.

  6. > It also criticized Wood for taking his case public instead of quietly resolving the dispute with the company

They’re basically confirming that the law is not there to protect the individual.

  7. I can’t wait to get the fuck out of this simple minded society stuck in 17th century. Boy, I will love Europe despite all it’s flaws even more now. 🙂

  8. I really don‘t understand the point of laws and the constitution in Japan, if courts are just breaking both 24/7, especially when foreign nationals are involved.
