How come teaching positions in Okinawa are so rare?

  1. Because you have to be fluent in both languages to even be considered and many Japanese people on Okinawa are good at English. At least from my experience

  2. Because the population’s like ~1.3m all up (individual cities are tiny) and it’s a touristie / defence kinda area?

  3. Only about 1.3 million people and 80,000 are Americans.

Okinawa doesn’t have extensive manufacturing, depending instead on seasonal tourism income. It has the highest unemployment rate in Japan and got hit hard by the pandemic.

From talking to foreign residents (besides Americans) who live there, jobs in any sector are scarce and low paid.

  4. There are a few JET positions on some of the outlying islands. Had a friend live on one and said there was nothing to do but fish and hike around the island. He ended up saving a ton of money. I wouldn’t do it due to the isolation but some more introverted teachers might enjoy it.

  5. Trust me, you don’t want an alt gig on a random island there. There’s plenty of beach side positions you get on the mainland. My apartment in Shizuoka was 1 minute from the beach
