I grew up in Alberta… the only time that relatives gave money was birthdays, graduations, similar special events… now my Japanese mother-in-law sometimes surprises me with gifts of cash before a trip, or even if I am going out for dinner. I am NOT complaining, I just don't know how common this is. Its not like we are struggling or anything… And are society expectations that I should be doing the same for my kids?
