Worried about paying NHI on working holiday visa

Hello! I am moving to Japan from Canada on a working holiday visa in January and am feeling pretty prepared. That being said, there's one area that is stressing me out and after exhaustive research online and in this sub, I still can't find an answer to. I'm really hoping someone can help me out!

I'll be in Japan from January 10 – May 1, which means unfortunately I'll need to deal with joining the NHI since I am there for over 3 months. I assume that registration will happen when I register my first address, which is a sharehouse in Shiohama. I will be there for 5 weeks. After those 5 weeks, I'll be moving to a hostel in Hiroshima for 2 months. From there, I'll be traveling with no fixed address for 2.5 weeks before heading back to Canada.

My question/concern is surrounding payment. It seems like they send the bills monthly via mail, but I am moving 3 times in quick succession so I am worried that I will always be ahead of the bills being sent.

Is there another way to pay? If I set up a bank account can they just pull the money? Am I able to pay in advance for the months I know I'm in Japan? Will the process for payment change when I move from Shiohama to Hiroshima? And finally, will I need to un-enroll when I leave Japan, or does it automatically end when my Visa ends (which will be triggered by me leaving the country)?

Thank you so much! It's been stressful not being able to find a consistent answer on this.

  1. Just to make it more confusing, i moved over to a city in Kyushu around 8 years ago, my local Japanese embassy in my home country advised me to sort my own insurance out.
Long story short, when i visited the town hall in Kyushu they told me i should have NHI, so two different explanations.
I advised my embassy said i am not eligible for NHI and i sorted out my own travel insurance for the year, they let me go without paying NHI.
Doesnt help much but thought i would advise

  2. I recently received my payment slips for NHI in the mail. They send it out in July and you can pay a year in advance. You can also set up a direct deposit but I think it’ll have to be a Japanese bank account which is difficult for those on a WHV to open. You can also pay with the slips at the convenience store and JP Post. If you miss a payment they usually send reminders.
