Seeking Advice on Remote Work for European-Based Company While Living in Japan

Hi everyone,

I am currently working in Belgium but my Japanese wife and I plan to move to Japan in 2-3 years.

I'm looking for advice on finding a remote job with a European-based company while residing in Japan.

Here are some details about my situation:

-I will have a Japanese spousal visa, so work visas won't be an issue.
-I will have 3 years of experience in a fiscal/scientific/client projects-related role.
-I hold a Master's degree in Science (Biology).
-I can communicate professionally in English.

For those of you living in Japan but working remotely for companies based in other countries, I'd love to hear your stories and tips.

Specifically, I’m curious about:

Job Search: How difficult is it to secure a remote position with a European company while living in Japan? Any specific platforms or networks that you recommend?

Taxes and Legalities: I’ve read that using a Professional Employment Organization (PEO) can simplify payroll, taxes, and health insurance. How does this work in practice? Also, is it true that if the company doesn’t have a Japanese branch, I can work as a freelancer without causing tax issues for them?

Pros and Cons: Here’s what I’ve considered so far:

Pros: Full work-from-home, flexible schedule, higher salary compared to working for a Japanese company, and the ability to pay Japanese taxes on a European salary.

Cons: Possible late-night meetings due to time differences, no company-managed health insurance/pension, challenges in communicating with colleagues especially during winter in Europe, and lack of workplace social interactions.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or personal experiences you can share.

Thank you for your help! Looking forward to your responses!
