Confused about transportation for Fuji Summit day hike

Hi all,

I plan on doing a day hike to summit Fuji with a day hike, not staying overnight in a hut. I am not worried about the altitude – we live at decent altitude at baseline and are taking prophylactic diamox anyways – also we are both in excellent shape.

We bought reservations for Yoshida trail. Initially was planning to take the express bus from Tokyo (Shinjuku bus terminal) to the Mt Fuji Subaru 5th Station. Earliest bus is 6:45am, with an arrival time of approximately 9:20.

It seems the hike will take about 8 hours to ascend and descend, give or take. However from what I’m seeing online, the last bus departing the Mt Fuji Subaru 5th Station going back to Shinjuku departs at 5pm. This seems like an incredibly tight time window to make.

Am I missing something? How do we get back into Tokyo in the late afternoon from Mt Fuji Subaru 5th Station?

Our alternative plan would be to take a taxi/cab from Tokyo to Fuji super early, leaving Tokyo around 4am to get there earlier so that we can finish earlier. Would like to not spend this much money though.
