3rd Generation Ancestry Visa – Have You Done It?

Hi there!

I'm currently working towards applying for my Ancestry Visa asap.

My Grandmother is Japanese and has given me her original Koseki.

I'm having some difficulty finding others who have done the process (believe I've found most of the reddit posts and articles online). Have a few general questions:

  • Would my Grandmother's original Koseki be usable? This is original and dated from the 1960s in Tochigi. My Grandmother is still alive and is giving me the paperwork (she currently lives in the US).

-I have two small dogs. It sounds like there is a quarantine period before you can travel with the dogs of about 6 months. If anyone has moved with their dogs I'd love insight on this (feels overwhelming). Been referencing this resource: https://www.maff.go.jp/aqs/animal/dog/attach/pdf/import-other-42.pdf

  • Does anyone have any lawyers / translators they would recommend to help with the process (both to speed up the process and help to compile/translate the letter/communications)? I am unfortunately not fluent in japanese and would plan to become fluent once I move there through classes.

-Guarantor: I do have relatives in Japan but culturally it feels uncomfortable to ask this from them. They would likely be willing if I ask, but could a language teacher in japan that I would be studying with also suffice?

  • For those who have/or are familiar with the process: how long did the process take once all paperwork submitted? I'm seeing varied timelines. Would love to have a move finalized by the latest 6 months if possible.

This article was useful but she mentioned photos to prove guarantor relationship, as well as . I haven't seen my distant family in japan in many years (because I have not been in japan to do so).

I am planning to visit Japan in November in case I need to sort any of this out beforehand/meet with family, go to Tochigi for additional paperwork, etc.
