Do I have to pay double in capital gains tax on US equities or is there a way to avoid?

Hi JF,

US taxpayer, lived in JP 5+ years.

Finally looking to rebalance by US brokerage stock account. I have some individual stocks that I've held for years and I think I want to sell them, take the profit, and just reinvest it in a boglehead fashion.

I'm not sure if it matters but most of these will be long-term capital gains in the US.

As I will pay tax on these in the US, do I have to pay in Japan as well?

Any credits, etc? Does it fall under "earned income", FTC, or something similar? Or do I just pay in the US, then report it separately from my normal paycheck here, and pay in JP too?

I know the sidebar says "don't ask for professional advice", but can we ask for the contacts of professional advice? (e.g. if anyone knows any tax lawyer versed in the above in tokyo?)
