Recently, bears sightings are on the rise in Nikko including residential areas. Even an attack incident happened. Though no bear has been spotted around Toshogu Shrine, multiple sightings have been reported in more mountainous areas including Lake Chuzenji and one of the Ryuzu falls parking lots. I saw a X post telling that a foreign tourist friend walking along a trail in the national park spotted a bear.
Make sure not to discard or leave food outdoors that may lure bears.
