Bringing alcohol into Japan.

So Im curious as I never have done this before.

So im thinking of going back home to visit family y soon.
When im coming back i will basically be going from my home country to new york.prob spend a few days there then fly to narita.

Can i purchase duty free in my home country then just chuck that into my checked luggage when heading back to japan. I wont find that alco in america so just curious if this is a thing?

I wanted to bring as a gift for friends here.
