How long did it take you to be able to handle conversations relating to daily life?
Although I can talk to others at a basic level, handling the finer details eludes me quite a bit. For example, talking about whether the fence needs to be closed if someone's car was going to be parked in the evening anyways, or where their car was currently, etc. Even simple words like 止まる give me pause as to whether I'm using them correctly or not, and I realize that I frequently take shortcuts in conversation – like using the same words that I just heard, rather than choosing a synonym or a better fitting word. It's perfectly fine to do so, but it feels like that would hamper me from being able to think of words on my own if I were to just use the one I most recently heard instead.
Although I know the answer is just "practice more", I very often don't notice any improvements consciously. At best I realize much later on what I could or should've said instead, by which point it's far too late, l'esprit de l'escalier x 100.
