I just started a month ago but I sadly have to go back home to the U.K. due to a serious family issue that I won’t get into also my health has gotten worse . I haven’t worked with the company that long but I did work with them previously with no issues. I’m really worried about the penalties and actually telling my manager , flights back to England are super expensive so it might not be for a few weeks. Do you guys have any course of action or help / advice ? Sorry for moaning but I’m super anxious and scared

Depends on so many things. What contract did you sign and do you have a Nova subleased apartment?
If you make a run for it they can’t do anything to you. That being said if you ever return to Japan they can certainly file suit against you for damages caused. Even if your not present for the lawsuit it can be used to garnish wages from future employment in Japan.
Honestly though most likely they will do nothing.
Just tell them. They might surprise you. If it’s for a couple of weeks it will be easier for them to just rearrange the schedule then get a new person in, if it’s forever then you don’t have to worry about coming back

If you’ve gotta go then you’ve gotta go – don’t put-off serious family shit for any employer (let alone an eikaiwa!!!) In years to come when you’re earning $$$ and have moved on from Nova, this period in your working life will seem far less significant, but FAMILY will always be relevant no matter what (even if you hate them).
I’d personally just tell them. What’s the worst they’re gonna do? IMO above all Nova need staff (you’re their product… you’re why people don’t just go online and chat with somebody from the Philippines for 200 yen an hour). I was there under the original Monkey-Bridge & Swedish-Backpacker management but my experience was that management were more reasonable than people will tell you on Reddit.
Possible penalties? I’d be thinking pay’s your only thing. You won’t get paid and rent may keep coming in while you’re away. Possible options…
– Can your family spot you?
– Is there a way for you to completely move outta their flat and move back into a new one (maybe with a new branch…etc) when you return?
– What will you lose if you quit and move home for good? Like I dunno how much longer you wanna stay with Nova but if you call it a day and move-in with family short-term then is that a big loss if your visa’s only for another 3-6 months anyway? Your call.
What penalties do you mean? As long as you give proper notice, e.g., two weeks, there are no legal penalties for quitting your job. They have to pay you for whatever work you did and cannot withhold anything – if they try to tell you otherwise, they are breaking the law.
Be smart!
Don’t let NOVA take your hard-earned money.
Say that you need to go back home for a month, Otherwise, you’ll have to pay an astronomical amount of penalties.
Work until the end of this month. Your May pay will be paid on June 15th. Do NOT work any days in June. You won’t get paid for your hours and transportation. You can tell them you won’t be back on June 17th, not before.
Try and pay your gas/water/phone bills before you go through.
They won’t file a suit however they might get you blacklisted from getting an apartment in the future.
I know a few Nova ex-teachers that went down this route.
Just leave without notice. They absolutely do not care about you. Save your money
Just tell them. They’ll obviously want you to work as long as you can. They’ll probably screw you over a bit, but you can easily negotiate a early termination on your apartment etc. And if you give at least 2 weeks notice you’ll still have money on your final paycheck.
Not helpful now, but I would say no one should sign the ID contract or take Nova’s apartment unless you have absolutely no other choice, because they will screw you over.
I’m flying over in one month. I can’t give you much advice, but I wish you the best and that some great solution comes to you. All the best !
Give them the legal amount of notice and leave. Sorry to say, but they do not care about you. They only care about filling your vacancy. That’s why they.might try to keep you longer through threats or flattery depending on your HR style.
You have very good reasons for going. I would first send an email and inform them. Then, arrange to meet your manager and hear what he has to say. You are not doing anything ‘wrong’ at all and he can only express his regret you are leaving. Try and make the best compromise with them, but make sure that you get to leave on the date you need to. Also, and I know this is hard as a fellow anxiety sufferer, but remember that you have needs and those needs trump those of your employer. Also, as sad as it is, the company only care you are leaving early for administrative reasons. Once you have worked it out with them, they move on to the other admin issues. Good luck!
Are you staying in an apartment that they provided you with?
If so, you’ll probably have to fork over 100,000 yen as a penalty. Most likely they’ll deduct it from your final paycheck.
