i’m 20 years old, born in japan to a japanese mother and american father and given dual citizenship as a birthright. i’ve been living in the us for 18 years and have let my japanese passport expire. it’s my understanding that i have until the age of 22 to declare one of these nationalities and to renounce the other, as japan doesn’t allow dual citizenships. it is also my understanding that this is more of a grey area, and i can retain both citizenships as long as i tell the embassy or any other official it is my intent to renounce my us citizenship. the question i have is if letting my japanese passport expire was a mistake, and if this will make it harder to retain both of my citizenships. if anyone has any insight on this please let me know.
