Gion Matsuri— anything happening between July 1-7?

Hi! Headed to Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara these days (July 1-7) and really hoping to immerse myself in festivals snd cultures. However I heard that the days that anything really happens are after my return flight (July 7) 😔 Is this true?
