Permanent Residency + My Number Card Renewal

The last thread on this subject didn't include details and was from a while back, so I'm here for more deets.

I recently (just picked up my card yesterday) received my Permanent Residency, yay! (for the curious, I applied via the 10-year route, with an Immigration Lawyer to make the process as painless and stress-free as possible, from Tokyo via Shinagawa. I applied in March 2023, so altogether it took 16 months. JFC).

My previous visa, a 3-year work visa, was set to expire in October (so I was starting to sweat I was going to have to renew that while STILL waiting for the PR approval), and my My Number Card has that same expiration date written on it.

Now that I have PR, I know I need to renew the MNC's expiration date, but how do I go about doing so? Getting the MNC in the first place was a pain and required making appointments ahead of time, so I assume I can't just walk into my ward office. According to what I've seen online, I should get a notice ~3 months before it's due to expire (never done a MNC renewal before) — is that actually the case, or does it vary by location? Should I just wait for that notice, or should I contact the office and ask them directly?

Let me know how you lucky PR holders handled your first MNC renewal after getting approval please!

ETA: Went within 14 days, just in case, but the verdict is (for Shinjuku Ward at least): go before your MNC's expiration date, period. You do not have to do it within 14 days of changes to your status of residency.
