Is is worth travelling to Japan between 23 December to 1st January?

Hi All,

Me and my wife are planning to travel to Japan this new year's week – planning to visit Tokyo, Nara, Kyoto, and Osaka. I have a few questions as opinions on the web are conflicting –

1. Should we even travel at this time?

2. Are the major parts of the cities (bars, restaurants, parks, temples, viewpoints, etc.) closed?

3. Are the cities crowded/less crowded/empty?

4. Which is the best city to stay in for New Year's eve?

5. How cold is it? Is it going to prohibit us from visiting major attractions?

6. Any specific experiences one should not miss?

Please help as I plan to confirm my bookings soon!
