Can anyone tell me what the white square is called? I know it was sweet but can’t remember what it was called, last time I was in Japan I was 16.

  1. Well I don’t know the name of that PARTICULAR sweet, but traditional sweets as a whole that are served with tea are called Wagashi

  2. It’s not a yokan. I recognise the place, I’ve had the same set. It’s a very hard and sugary type of wagashi. I guess rakugan would be the closest, but generally we just call them wagashi.

  3. The confectionery is a white rakugan made of wasanbon.「和三盆でできた白い落雁」
The confectionery is with the Kinrakuji temple and the Phoenix stamped on it and covered with gold dust. Inside is a salty bean paste made from Daitokuji natto.
You can buy it as a souvenir from Senbon Tamajuken, a Kyoto confectionery in Kamigyo-ku, but it seems to be sold only at Kinkakuji Temple.
In short, it is a 落雁 souvenir from Kinkakuji Temple.
