this happened short while ago but im still quite curious about it
Out of boredom, My friends and I waved to a few tourists. Afterwards, I waved to a group of Japanese guys as they passed (they look around the age of 20). Then this specific Japanese guy turned to face me, grinned, and tapped his friends quickly while pointing at me. His friends waved back to me, all of them grinning, as they went.
however, when they returned a few minutes later, they were all grinning and waving at me. After giving them a wave in return, they called me "kawaii" and their friend pulled out his phone, insisting that I take a picture with him or them. I politely declined.
Are they being genuinely kind or something else? Let me know about your opinion!
