Advice on Tokyo neighbourhood to live in

So I will be moving to Tokyo with my partner in August and have been offered accommodation as part of her job.

The first apartment that they have offered us is in Shimo-Ochiai, not far from Mejiro station. Work is more central but only 40 mins door to door per Google maps.

Basically, I’m finding it difficult working out how the Shimo-Ochiai area and surrounding area is as a place to live and wondered if anyone else had experience living nearby?

Thanks!

  1. I lived in Mejiro a decade ago and liked it. Quiet neighborhood, but close to Ikebukuro and the Yamanote line for ease of transport. Some nice little restaurants and cafes.

  2. Its generally a cheap area because its sandwiched between three big universities, so lots of cheap student housing.

There are certain areas around Hyakunincho that can get pretty sketchy though but its all relative.

  3. It’s a pretty quiet area, lots of student housing. My daughter lived there for about 6 months. It’s close to Takadanobaba which has a fair amount of stuff to do and places to shop.
