Happiness Index 2022 (by prefecture)

The sample size is indeed small, but it gives a glimpse of how people feel about their living standards across the country. Naturally, it makes sense that climate plays a big role (around the world as well). How does your prefecture/area of residence fare? Do you agree or disagree?

I have only resided in Fukuoka City and I can agree with our ranking. We have a relatively young population, great urban development and QOL is very good in my years here so far (moved here in 2013).

  1. Shizuoka #4 I believe it. I love it here. I’ve been in Shizuoka 5 years and I never wanna leave.

  2. Interesting map! I wonder why continent-facing Japan is so much less happy than ocean-facing Japan.

Other than Kanto, whose low ranking doesn’t surprise me one bit.

  3. Im in a dreary part of Tokyo so it doesn’t surprise me much because I’m surrounded by sour faced old miseries and stressed out workers and parents. And the young people I presume are too broke to be happy. I like it here though I can walk to the supermarket.

  4. > The sample size is indeed small

500 from each prefecture isn’t small at all… but I’d be more concerned about how they blended the different aspects into one score. “willingness to reside permanently” seems like an interesting one to break down.

  5. I love Okinawa too!

Being from Hong Kong, I don’t really like big cities like Tokyo. Osaka is ok but my wife and I still prefer places like Okinawa. It has big malls for us to feel like home, while a lot of different nice places to relax like 海中道路.

Oh my I love Japan so much. Stupid COVID!
