Sakura Mobile Vs Mobal

I am headed to Japan for 90 days to study abroad I am debating between obtaining a data-only sim card from either Sakura Mobile or Mobal. They both offer no contract plans that last up to 90 days but have nuanced differences between the cost of data.

Mobal has a better options in terms of data needs but I saw some reviews about shady billing practices. I was wondering if anyone could speak to their experiences with either and which they preferred.

  1. Sakura was fine for me, I don’t have many complaints. I liked that I could e-mail them to change my plan if I was expecting to use more or less data the following month. There’s a setup fee though which, if you’re only amortizing over 3 months, will be steep.

Maybe alternatively look at Google Fi? They are offering a $200 credit for new users which would probably translate to free service.

  2. Sakura is pretty good. Line Mobile is great, but not a good temporary option.

Mobal is fine *if you get the fixed-term prepaid.* I wouldn’t go so far as “shady”, but their billing gets obtuse on their post-paid plan.

  3. I use a Sakura Mobile SIM card right now. I am not sure about Mobal, but one of the nice things about Sakura is they were able to help me get my phone unlocked and install the SIM card. I picked it up in person in Shinjuku. I haven’t used Mobal, or anyone else for that matter, but I have no complaints with the service. People at the office are quite nice.

Also, I am not sure but I think I remember seeing a promo code on Reddit.

  4. I used Sakura mobile with no complaints or issues. Can’t compare because it’s all that I have used.
