Is it Worth Postponing a New Job for Permanent Residence in Japan?

Hi Reddit,

I could really use some advice on a significant career and life decision.

Here’s my situation:

My current job in Japan expires on August 31.
I have a new job in the Netherlands, which is a 1-year contract, starting on September 1.
I applied for permanent residence (PR) in Japan a few months ago, but it's taking longer than expected. There’s a chance I might receive my PR in September or October.
I’m torn between two options:

Postpone my start date in the Netherlands (if possible) and wait in Japan to receive my PR. This would ensure I have PR status, which is beneficial for long-term settlement and potential re-entry into Japan after my contract in the Netherlands ends.

Start my new job on September 1 as planned, but risk not getting my PR. I'm concerned because, as a scientist, I will likely always be working in an institution and not independently, so I'm not sure how critical PR status is for my career. However, I do want to settle in Japan long-term and plan to return after my contract in the Netherlands.

Is it worth postponing the new job and waiting for PR? How beneficial is having PR in Japan for someone in my field, especially considering I won't be working independently? Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
