I was there for a couple of years in the 1980s and traveled the island extensively.
Having grown up in the US, where you had to be careful where you went, I really appreciated that everywhere I went in Okinawa felt safe, even at night.
I'm wondering if this is still the case or are there neighborhoods where you have to be alert for aggressive behavior, because you're an outsider.
I hope not. The sense of safety was something I really loved about the Okinawan people.
EDIT: Thanks everyone. Happy to hear that Okinawans are still exceptionally law-abiding and peaceful. Sad to hear that there's still a problem with asshole GIs and dependents.
