How to keep phone # when moving to Japan?

Im going to be moving to japan for just over 3 months starting next month. Im a student and interning for quite a low pay so I need to make sure I budget hard, that means it is impossible for me to pay for multiple phone plans or data roaming.

Im Canadian and with Fido, I will be upgrading my iphone with fido before leaving to a newer one which supports esim. Im told I can suspend my number and pay only for the iphone for about 7$ a month which would cost me roughly 35$ to keep my phone, where I could then find cheap data plans on ubigi. My greatest concern is of course my phone number, I have tons of friends, family and professional relationships who know my contact only through my phone number and I cant afford to lose the ability to communicate with all of these people for 3 months. Has anyone had a similar issue? What are my options to both keep my phone number active while also having a Japanese sim which will allow me to use data out there? Does anyone know if they suspend their phone plan if you could still use Imessage with a Japanese data plan (with the same phone number)?

Thanks!
