11 Day Itinerary Check – Tokyo, Kyoto, and Kinosaki in September

This will be my partner's first trip to Japan and my second, though my first trip was only spent in Hokkaido. I've left most days relatively open to exploring, but to be clear I have a Wanderlog filled with some 200+ places. The idea being that, with some exceptions, we can open up the app for recommendations depending on where we're at that day.

I am wondering if I am still trying to do too much here, especially for Tokyo and all of the different
neighborhoods. All hotels have been booked already except for our last night in Tokyo. We're hoping to get a nicer hotel ($300-$400usd) with a convenient location to get to Narita for our final stay.

  1. I would recommend looking around Ueno station for your last night in Tokyo. We recently stayed in Kinosaki Onsen and traveled to Tokyo for our final days before flying out of Narita. The Shinkansen ticket from Kyoto to Tokyo station allowed a transfer, Ueno Station is one stop on the JR Ueno-Tokyo line, super easy.

When leaving you can take the Keisei Skyliner direct to Terminals 2-3 & Terminal 1 at Narita (≈45minutes). The Ueno Keisei Station is a cute little station next to the JR Ueno Station. We purchased all of our tickets when arriving at the train stations for the non-reserved cars on the Shinkansen, all of the seats are reserved on the Skyliner.

The Ueno area has great shopping for the last minute souvenirs and plenty of restaurants.

We also went to Shibuya Fureai Botanical Center. Only stayed 30 minutes, way smaller than it looked and we had just eaten lunch, so there really was not much to do there. Also one of the 7 public baths, Satono-Yu, is under remodel and not open.

  2. The Tobacco and Salt Museum is a good choice, but I don’t recall there is much in English there. (It’s possible I just didn’t notice.)

Jingu Stadium is also a good place to go.

  3. Having been to Kinosaki I’d skip the salt class and just relax and enjoy the Onsen town at leisure.
