Restaurant Queue Line Etiquette?

This may sound silly… but how does waiting in line for a restaurant work in Japan? Do you go inside and say your party then wait outside like in the US? Ive seen in video sometimes restaurant's will have a paper waitlist at the front door where you write your name down… so then you write your name and wait in line? Or do you just walk up to a line you see and stand and wait?

This is one anxiety thing my research is having a hard time figuring out so any clarifications would be helpful!
