Screwed up and need to pay 9 months worth of rent..

Firstly, I did something wrong and it is my fault I am already kinda panicking so no hate please.

I am currently living in a mansion recommended to me by my friend. The building owner and I have agreed to a direct verbal contract without a real estate agent so there is no signed contract between us. I set my account to automatically send the rent payment to the owners bank account. After I settled in, we rarely meet and whenever I try to contact him, he does not answer nor reply at all.

After years of almost no contact, yesterday, I received a call from him that I am missing 12 months worth of rent payments in a span of 3 years (I have been living there for 6 years.) After checking my bank account, it is true but only for 9 months. Currently checking with my bank as for the reason why…

He told me if I don’t pay he would want me out next month and he already reported me to the police. It is too sudden so I would like to try to negotiate with him.

I know I have missed my obligation to pay and I know it is my fault for not managing my finances well. However it made me think, why only now? If I have missed a payment he could’ve messaged me immediately. Right now I can’t pay for 9 months in one go but, but I can pay rent for 3 months first. As for the remaining balance, want to negotiate with him that I can pay 2 months worth of rent (current rent+remaining unpaid rent) for 3 months.

I am half Japanese with a working visa living here for 9 years. I am trying to change to Japanese citizen by the end of the year. Single and no family/relatives in and out of Japan. How screwed am l? Should this be a lawyer situation? Would like everyone’s opinions please.. Thank you!
