Advice on making a futon tolerable

Looking for the best, "tried and true" method for adding squish to a futon. Preferably a method that still allows me to put away the bed set up when not in use. Put politely, I am "curvy" but average weight. I am finding that having curves with the futon messes with my spinal alignment, and leads to a lot of pain and a sleepless night for me – no matter the sleeping position. Softer western mattresses seem to be able to absorb some of my curve, which keeps my alignment better throughout the night. So I figure I just need to add squish somehow.

This is my futon for reference. I put it directly on my carpet (medium pile) otherwise. With linens of course, but that's it presently.
