What is というものin this sentence?

空港でチェックインというものをします。

Google translates this to “check in at the airport”

But I know that という is used when you are saying “something is called this:”

My dictionary also says “というもの” means “something like/ something called”

So would the phrase actually be translated to:

“Do a thing called check in at the airport”.

Another thing I wanted to know is if saying

“空港でチェックインをします” would also be acceptable?
