Hi everyone,
First of all, I'm sorry I'm kind of cross-posting, but I just had the idea to look for a specific subreddit for Okinawa. My original post in japantraveltips is not getting me many answers: https://old.reddit.com/r/JapanTravelTips/comments/1cb54we/okinawa_how_to_the_most_of_a_few_days_with_a/
So, I'm planning a few days in Okinawa at the end of june for my wife and I. I know it's rainy and it's one of my worries.
Specifically I'm trying to plan a "secluded, crystal-clear waters" beach vacation so I'm thinking of skipping the main island entirely. To be clear, not absolutely desert beaches, just not too crowded is perfectly fine.
This is where it gets a bit tough: everything I find says there are great beaches everywhere, so how do I pinpoint the perfect base for a few days?
I find basically no useful "itinerary" articles, they seem to all focus on the main island.
So I'm currently hesitating between 3 options:
Option 1: straight to Yaeyama Islands, stay there for a few days enjoying beaches and nature activites. It kind of seems like a no-brainer with my criteria, but I'm worried it leans a bit too much into the "nature activities". I love being able to hike/kayak/enjoy nature, but I still want those few days to mainly be about enjoying beaches with crystal-clear water. + if the weather is bad, we're screwed.
Option 2: straight to Miyakojima. Are the beaches there better or same than Yaeyama?
Option 3: Main island and day-trips to nearby islands. A lot more flexible in case of bad weather, but less paradise-like than I'm aiming for. Still, I see a LOT of amazing things online… like beaches on Akajima and others, the "moving" beach on Yoronjima, etc. But maybe it's a case of instagram VS reality, with crowds downgrading the real experience?
We're not specifically pressed for time as we live in Japan and work on our own schedule, the determining issue is the budget. 🙂
If anyone with inside knowledge has advice, it would be extreeemely welcome.
