Today I found a list of banned Japanese that you’re not allowed to say on radio or tv in Japan. What I found most interesting is 外人Gaijin, 板前itamae and八百屋 yaoya San also made it to the list. For more detail the link is below. http://www.big-c.or.jp/~makichan/100420housoukinsi.pdf

  1. Dang, as a gaijin on the radio, I really outta take this list to heart, if only for the sake of my boss who edits my recordings 😂 thanks OP!

  2. It’s interesting how “健全なる精神は健全なる身体に宿る (Orandum est ut sit mens sana in corpore sano – A sound mind in a sound body)” is there without explanation yet. I bet it’s new inclusion since Paralympic came to Tokyo.

There are many oooold slangs along with something rather basic like ブス (ugly). And apparently penis is okay but pussy is not cool (as it’s actually explained there lol)

New thing I learned here is ヤンキー’s etymology not being Yankee (as in American) but comes from やんけ (slang against Kawachi-dialect speaker – I suppose because they tend to end their sentence with やんけ and it’s part of Osaka).

  3. 田舎 has been my go to word when I want to say countryside. Never knew it was impolite and the pdf didn’t suggest an alternative.

  4. Really? You guys are just gonna go with this?

I heard all these words on Japanese TV many times before.

  5. List is obviously incomplete. How could they miss くしゃがら?

edit — on a more serious note I think it’d interesting you can’t use いなか in regards to some else who’s from Tokyo.

  6. Girlfriend used to refer to me as 外人 sometimes when we’re out with friends or on her instagram posts. Not all the time. Never took offense to it or anything since she was using it almost as a term of endearment.

  7. This is not a official list and no officials released the banned word list. It even has some examples of use.

  8. This is quite interesting. When I was in elementary school in Japan, most of these words were just fine.

  9. As a Japanese, this topic is a joke to me. After all, foreigners who don’t speak Japanese don’t know about Japan and have no interest in it.
