Confused by secondhand shops

Is it normal for the staff in Japanese secondhand shops not to take the clothing that doesn’t fit you, requiring you to hang it back yourself? I don’t mind doing it, but I’m worried I might make mistakes trying to hang everything correctly. In Europe, there’s usually a rack next to the changing room for this purpose, but after living here for a few months, I’ve never seen a place to hang the clothes.

  1. Generally, you put the clothes back yourself at second hand shops I’ve been to. Take smaller batches of clothes and make note of where you got them. Second hand stores run a lean operation and don’t keep a lot of staff on hand. What I’ve found is that if a store has a separate area for trying on clothes with staff assigned specifically to that area, you can hand clothes back to them.

Another thing is that while I’ve been asked in many stores if everything is okay, I have never seen a Japanese person actually ask the staff for a different size. I’ve seen other foreigners do it, and the staff seemed quite confused with how much fetching they were actually doing (there was one instance years ago in a GU where there was a woman who was basically having the staff running back and forth. They were whispering about it as I left. They definitely weren’t expecting to be getting tons of different sizes for this woman).
