How can I prepare to meet with Japanese speakers?

I have a bad memory of when I was much younger. I was a college student who’d just finished his first year of college and Japanese learning. I wanted to keep learning so during the summer I signed up for an event where Japanese learners and native speakers met once a week to speak in Japanese.

I remember going there incredibly nervous, barely able to introduce myself. And then people started speaking, and I didn’t understand a thing. This was the “beginners” group, by the way. I kinda just sat there feeling like a moron while everyone talked around me. I never went back, too embarrassed to show my face again.

And I really regret that…10 years later. As I’m starting to try and learn again I’ve signed up for that same group. All the members have changed and I doubt anyone would remember me.

That being said, I still cringe at the embarrassing memory. While I think I’ve gotten better, my listening comprehension still leaves plenty to be desired.

How should I prepare for this meeting? It’s in about two weeks. I’m trying to study some stock phrases and reactions, so at the very least I can pretend to know what I’m doing. And I’m also trying to listen to more podcasts.
